Two-Prong Outlets in Older L.A. Homes: Your Three Options

If your house predates about 1965, there's a good chance the branch circuits were run without an equipment grounding conductor. You notice it the day you try to plug in a computer, a window AC unit or anything with a three-prong plug and find two slots staring back at you.
First, the thing you must not do
Do not swap the two-prong receptacle for a three-prong one. It takes four minutes and it's the most common dangerous DIY repair in older Los Angeles housing. The new outlet advertises a ground path that does not exist, so surge protectors silently stop protecting, and a fault in an appliance energizes its metal case instead of tripping anything. Home inspectors test for this specifically, and it comes up on nearly every sale of a pre-war house.
Option 1: GFCI protection, labeled
The National Electrical Code allows an ungrounded circuit to be protected by a GFCI device, with the receptacles labeled 'GFCI Protected' and 'No Equipment Ground.' A GFCI doesn't create a ground — it watches for current leaking anywhere it shouldn't and cuts power in milliseconds, which is the shock protection you actually care about.
- Cheapest of the three, and legal.
- Protects people. Does not protect sensitive electronics, because surge protectors still have nowhere to dump a surge.
- One GFCI at the first device in the run can protect everything downstream of it.
Option 2: run a ground to the specific outlet
Where a circuit is accessible — a garage, a basement, an unfinished attic run — pulling an equipment grounding conductor back to the panel or bonding to an approved point gives you a real ground at that location. This is the right answer for the outlet behind your desk or the one feeding a home theater, and it's usually done selectively rather than house-wide.
Option 3: rewire the circuit
The complete fix. New wire, new grounds, and often the end of decades of accumulated junction-box improvisation inside the walls. It's the most disruptive and the most expensive, and it's the correct call when you're already opening walls for a remodel, when the existing wiring is cloth-insulated and crumbling, or when you find knob-and-tube still in service.
If the insulation cracks off the conductor when an electrician flexes it in the box, you're not choosing between three options anymore.
How to decide
- Selling soon and want the inspection clean? GFCI protection with proper labels, everywhere.
- One room with real electronics? Run a ground to those specific outlets.
- Remodeling, or the wiring is cloth-covered and brittle? Rewire the circuits while the walls are open — it will never be cheaper than it is right now.
What about aluminum wiring?
Different problem, same era of housing. Aluminum branch wiring from the mid-to-late sixties needs approved connectors at every device — not a wire nut, and not a copper pigtail twisted on by hand. If you see dull gray conductors, get it looked at before you replace a single switch.
